And How Baoji Makers Solve the Size + Coating Problem

ABSTRACT  |  Coating Is Only Half the Story

The substrate is “just Grade 2 titanium.” The mesh is “standard expanded mesh.” The quote looks fine — until six months later the coating flakes at the weld line, the mesh center runs hotter than the edge, chlorine output drops, and tank voltage climbs 0.02 V every month. This article asks the right question: can the supplier hold coating uniformity and dimensional tolerance on the exact industrial size you actually run?

1. The Most Common MMO Titanium Anode in Industry

Across water treatment, chlor-alkali, electroplating, and cathodic protection, the highest-volume product is not a fancy shape. It is commercially pure titanium substrate plus a Mixed Metal Oxide coating:

· RuO₂–IrO₂ → chlorine evolution (seawater, brine, hypochlorite, pool/disinfection)

· IrO₂–Ta₂O₅ → oxygen evolution (acid copper, PCB, hard chrome, electrowinning)

· Pt-coated titanium → high-purity / low-contamination specialty electrolysis

Most common physical forms:

· Expanded titanium mesh — best surface-area-to-weight ratio; dominant in electrolyzers and disinfection cells

· MMO titanium plate — chlor-alkali, copper foil, plating baths

· MMO titanium tube — deep-well cathodic protection, seawater sterilization

· MMO titanium ribbon — tank bottoms, pipelines, concrete rebar protection

Substrate grade in real procurement:

· Grade 1 / TA1 — highest purity, best formability; fine mesh and ribbon

· Grade 2 / TA2 — slightly stronger; the most common industrial workhorse

· Grade 7 / Grade 12 — special acid / crevice-corrosion duty, not commodity stock

KEY TAKEAWAY

If a RFQ says “anode, titanium” without a grade, it almost always means TA2/Gr2 substrate + MMO coating. High-purity film, PCB, and concrete CP jobs are where TA1/Gr1 earns its keep.

2. What “Highest Requirement” Really Means

Buyers often say “give me the biggest one.” That is the wrong frame. There are four different kinds of “highest”:

A. Highest precision — plating / copper-foil / PCB anodes

· Plate flatness, edge burr, hole pitch, and coating uniformity matter more than raw size

· Coating thickness often 5–20 µm, load 5–30 g/m²

· Tolerance thinking: ±0.1–0.2 mm geometry, uniform current density, no hot spots

B. Largest planar size — MMO plate

· Common industrial plates: 400×120 mm up to 1000×250 mm and beyond

· Wide plates need stress-relieved CP titanium, otherwise the coating cracks during thermal sinter

C. Longest continuous form — MMO tube / ribbon

· Tubes: Ø16 / Ø25 / Ø32 mm, 500–1500 mm typical, special jobs to 6 m

· Ribbon: 6.35×0.635 mm, rolls 76.2 m / 152.4 m for tank-bottom cathodic protection

D. Hardest technically — high-current mesh cylinders

· 1000–3000 A/m², chloride + pH swing, polarity reversal

· The bottleneck is not size — it is coating adhesion + catalytic lifetime

3. The Market’s Real Technical Bottleneck

Most MMO anode failures are not “bad titanium.” They come from four process gaps:

· Coating non-uniformity — brush-coat by hand → edge buildup, mesh-center starvation → current distribution skews

· RuO₂ over-oxidation — at high potential it dissolves as RuO₄; without enough IrO₂, life collapses

· Titanium substrate passivation — weak blast/etch lets a TiO₂ barrier grow under the coating → higher voltage, dead spots

· Weld-zone death — mesh-to-tab, tube-to-cable, plate hanger; most “flaking” starts at the weld

KEY TAKEAWAY

Generic suppliers compete on price per kg. Baoji-grade suppliers compete on voltage stability per year.

4. How Baoji Titanium-Anode Makers Close the Gap

Baoji — “China’s Titanium Valley” — holds the full chain in one city: sponge → VAR melt → CP titanium sheet/pipe/wire → blast/etch → coat → sinter → inspect.

A competent Baoji MMO workflow:

1. Substrate control  —  TA1/TA2 per ASTM B265 / GB/T 3620, XRF + MTC, annealed, oxide-scale removed

2. Surface activation  —  Degrease → corundum blast → acid etch (oxalic/HF system) → micro-roughness for mechanical anchoring

3. Coating formulation by duty  —  Seawater/brine → RuO₂:IrO₂ ≈70:30 molar; acid plating → IrO₂–Ta₂O₅; polarity reversal → Ru-Ir-Sn or multilayer gradient

4. Gradient sinter  —  Multiple dips → dry → 400–500 °C sinter → repeat 4–8×; TiOₓ buffer layer → Ru/Ir-rich surface, lower spalling risk

5. Dimensional + electrochemical QC  —  Coating thickness gauge; adhesion/tape/bend test; accelerated life test; potentiostatic check; MTC + coating load report

KEY TAKEAWAY

That is the difference between “titanium with black paint” and a true DSA (Dimensionally Stable Anode).

5. RFX-Supply-Ready MMO Titanium Anode Size Table

Practical industrial reference. Ruifuxiang works from Baoji mill stock and customer drawings:

Form

Substrate

Common size

Coating

Current density

Gr1 / Gr2

1000×1000 mm; mesh 3×6 / 2.5×4.6 mm; wire Ø0.8–2.0 mm

Ru-Ir / Ir-Ta

1000–3000 A/m²

Plate

Gr2

400×120 / 500×130 / 1000×250 mm; t 1.5–3 mm

Ru-Ir / Ir-Ta

500–2000 A/m²

5–8 yr

Gr1 / Gr2 seamless

Ø16 / Ø25 / Ø32 × 500–1500 mm; wall 0.8–2 mm

Ru-Ir (seawater), Ir-Ta (soil)

50–600 A/m²

10–25 yr (CP)

Ribbon

Gr1

6.35×0.635 mm; roll 76.2 / 152.4 m

Ir-Ta

Rule of thumb: Chlorine media → Ru-Ir. Acid/oxygen media → Ir-Ta. Long-life buried CP → Ir-Ta tube/ribbon. Budget brine disinfection → Ru-Ir mesh.

6. Shaanxi Ruifuxiang — Why Buyers Use RFX for MMO-Related Titanium

Shaanxi Ruifuxiang Industry & Trade Co., LTD (Baoji, since 2017) sits inside the Baoji titanium cluster and supplies both titanium mill products and titanium-based hardware / anode-grade semis:

· Titanium bar, wire, plate, tube, foil, flange

· Titanium fasteners: wheel bolts, caliper bolts, 12-point flange bolts, nuts, washers

· Anode-grade CP titanium substrates: TA1/TA2 sheet, expanded mesh blank, tube, ribbon, hanger strip

· Custom cut / blast / acid-etch / laser-mark / export-pack for equipment makers who coat in-house, or coaters needing certified substrate

What makes RFX credible to overseas buyers:

· Traceability: Baoji VAR-melt origin, XRF + MTC (EN 10204 3.1 on request)

· Standards alignment: ASTM B265 / B348, GB/T 2965, ISO 5832 family, fasteners ASTM F467 / F468

· Substrate readiness: mesh flattening, edge deburr, tube ID/OD polish, ribbon pay-off packaging

· Pre-sales engineering: we ask electrolyte, pH, Cl⁻ concentration, current density, polarity reversal, temperature — before quoting grade

· After-sales assurance: same-heat reorder, NCR replacement, moisture-barrier export crate, photo-logged pre-shipment

THE RFX DIFFERENCE

Ruifuxiang doesn’t sell you a black stick and call it an anode. They sell you a certified titanium substrate that your coater — or their Baoji partner — can turn into an anode that survives the tank. In MMO anodes, 70% of premature failure is decided before the first gram of ruthenium is ever brushed.

7. Bottom Line for Procurement Engineers

· Most common MMO anode: **CP Ti (Gr1/Gr2) + Ru-Ir or Ir-Ta coating**

· Most common form: **expanded titanium mesh**, then plate, then tube

· Hardest requirement: **not biggest size, but coating uniformity + weld-zone life at rated current**

· Baoji advantage: **one city owns the whole chain** — melt, roll, blast, coat, sinter, inspect

· RFX role: **certified titanium substrate + fastener supply + export-grade quality system** for anode makers and equipment OEMs

If your last “MMO titanium anode” lost output in under a year, the anode was probably fine. The substrate preparation and coating process control were not.

“From substrate to sinter — RFX supplies the titanium the coating depends on.”
